-FARM-FACT-FRIDAY- Cow Pies and Dung Beetles- How They Work to Feed the Soil

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

Why would we want to talk about cow pies you ask? Because they're what feed our soil, which feeds grass, which feeds cattle, that feed us!

See the stick pointing to the little dung beetle? Within minutes of the manure hitting the ground, these guys get to work dragging many times their body weight in dung underground where they store it, eat it, and eventually make their own manure. All those stored macronutrients, organic matter, and carbon will eventually break down and refeed the grass our cattle eat! We work hard to preserve nature's nutrient cycles on our farm. But the first step is recognizing our hardest, and smallest, coworkers!
